Rango, Balbido and the Bleggio Plateau from Comano Terme

Rango and Balbido fit naturally into one unhurried outing from Casa Regina 21. Before leaving, open the live driving route from Cares to Rango, because road conditions and parking arrangements can change.

The official Rango–Balbido–Passo Durone route describes Balbido as 7 km from Ponte Arche via the Bleggio road and lists free parking along the road between Balbido and Rango. Check the signs you find on arrival and avoid blocking village access.

Rango has belonged to the Borghi più Belli d’Italia association since 2006. Stone houses, timber galleries, cellars, covered passages and vaulted portech preserve the form of a compact rural settlement that once offered shelter to travellers on the Via Imperiale.

Start around the square fountain, then explore the lanes without hurrying. The small School Museum is another possible stop, but opening arrangements can be seasonal. Consult the official Visit Trentino guide to Rango before your visit.

Balbido is only a short walk from Rango. Its murals turn house walls into an open-air record of local work, customs, emigration, horses and the legends of the strie—the witches of local stories.

At the entrance to the village stands a 10.77-metre sculpture made from wood and bamboo canes. Visit Trentino describes it as having entered Guinness records as the world’s largest witch. Treat Rango and Balbido as one connected visit, while still leaving time to notice the individual paintings and village details.

For a village-and-countryside circuit, the official Rango, Balbido and Passo Durone route is listed as an easy 8.3 km loop taking about 2 hours 45 minutes, with 357 metres of ascent. “Easy” describes the technical grade; the distance and climb still require suitable footwear, water and normal walking fitness.

A separate option is the official Walnut Trail: a 9.6 km loop from Santa Croce, listed at about 2 hours 30 minutes with 265 metres of ascent. It links rural villages and walnut-growing landscapes. Check current weather and route information before choosing either walk.

1. check the live route, weather and any seasonal opening information;
2. explore Rango’s square, lanes and covered passages;
3. walk or drive the short connection to Balbido and look for its murals;
4. add a longer Bleggio walk only if time, daylight and conditions allow.

Rango’s Christmas markets normally run from mid-November into late December, while the wood-sculpture symposium is associated with summer. Event dates change, so confirm them on the official destination website rather than planning from an old calendar.
