Lake Molveno, Italy: a day trip from Comano Terme

Lake Molveno in Trentino, Italy, makes a practical full-day trip from Comano Terme. Casa Regina 21 in Cares is about 19 km away; in normal conditions the drive generally takes around 25 minutes, following the SS421 past Ponte Arche and San Lorenzo Dorsino. Treat that as a planning estimate and open the live route from Casa Regina 21 to Lake Molveno before leaving.

The organised Ischia parking area is beside the northern lakeshore and beach. Spaces, charges and access arrangements can change during busy periods, so arrive early in summer and check the Municipality of Molveno parking information together with the signs on arrival.

The northern shore is the easiest introduction to the lake. The official destination guide describes 12 hectares of beaches and lawns, with play areas, minigolf and seasonal water activities. It works well for a relaxed family day because the beach, village and main services are close together.

Swimming is popular in summer, but this is a deep alpine lake and the water can remain cold. Follow local safety notices and verify which facilities are open on the official Visit Trentino Lake Molveno page rather than relying on an old seasonal timetable.

The complete circuit is approximately 10–11 km and normally takes two to three hours. It is mostly level, but it is still a fairly long walk. Woodland sections can include roots, stones and short uneven passages, so use suitable footwear and do not assume the entire route has a smooth surface.

The route passes the Napoleonic forts and the so-called Roman Bridge on the wooded western side. If the full circuit is too much, walk out along the shore and return by the same route. Check the official Lake Molveno circuit page and current weather before setting out.

Lake Bior, connected to the northern end of Lake Molveno, is a practical alternative for young children or a slower day. Visit Trentino describes an almost level walk of roughly 20 minutes to a picnic area, followed by a similar return.

Much of this shorter route is suitable for pushchairs, although surfaces and weather can change. It leaves more time for the beach, playgrounds or lunch in Molveno without committing everyone to the full circuit.

For a higher viewpoint, the seasonal lift from Molveno reaches the Pradel plateau above the lake. The panorama makes the relationship between the water, the Paganella slopes and the Brenta Dolomites much easier to understand.

The Molveno–Pradel gondola starts in the village and reaches the plateau above the northern shore. Lift opening dates, weather restrictions and ticket arrangements vary, so check the operator’s current Pradel timetable and prices before including it in the plan. With children, choose either the full lake circuit or the Pradel outing unless everyone is comfortable with a long, active day.

1. leave Cares early and confirm the live route, weather and parking;
2. begin at the lido and decide whether the day is for swimming, walking or Pradel;
3. choose the full circuit only if the group has enough time, footwear and energy;
4. keep Lake Bior and the northern shore as the easier alternative;
5. allow time for the return to Comano Terme before evening mountain traffic.
