Where to stay in western Trentino: Comano, Molveno or Riva del Garda?

Choose the place where you want to spend your ordinary mornings and evenings, not just the place closest to a long list of sights. Our suggestion is to pick two priorities before comparing accommodation:

• Comano Terme: consider it for village surroundings, time near the thermal park and a mix of day trips. Lake days require a journey.
• Molveno: consider it if the lake and the Brenta mountain setting are the main reason for your holiday. Check the actual walk from the accommodation to the shore.
• Riva del Garda: consider it for the Garda waterfront and town life. A place near the centre is a different choice from accommodation outside town.

This is a comparison of three bases in western Trentino, not a ranking of every destination in the region. It is written by Casa Regina 21 in Cares: we explain where our house fits, and when staying elsewhere makes more sense.

Comano Terme brings together several villages around the thermal area, with a rural landscape of fields, woods and hamlets. The official Comano Terme destination page gives the geographical context.

Choose this base if returning to a village or a house with outdoor space appeals more than staying beside a lake. For a mixed holiday, use our Comano Terme guide to choose between the park, villages and outings. For frequent thermal appointments, compare each property’s real route to the facility; being in the same municipality does not mean being next door.

The trade-off: Comano is not a lakeside resort. If you want the same beach outside your door every morning, look at lakeside accommodation in Molveno or Riva first.

Molveno sits beside an alpine lake below the Brenta Dolomites. The northern shore has a lido and open spaces, while Pradel offers a different, higher viewpoint. See Visit Trentino’s official lake guide (Italian) for the setting.

We would favour a stay here when most days revolve around this lake and nearby mountain outings. Before booking, check the property’s route to the lido, including slopes; do not treat every address in Molveno as a level waterfront location.

Riva sits on the north-western shore of Lake Garda and combines its historic centre with waterfront and outdoor activities. The official Riva del Garda guide is a useful starting point.

We would choose it when evenings in town and repeated Garda days matter most. Check the exact location: walking to dinner, reaching a beach and storing a car may involve three different routes.

The trade-off: this is a lakeside-town holiday, not the same setting as a rural base in Comano. If you want just one Garda outing during a village-and-mountain stay, use our Riva and Varone day-trip guide.

1. Map two real days. Include the return trip and parking, not only the journey to the attraction. With a short stay, a base near your main activity can be more useful than a central-looking point on the map.
2. If travelling without a car, check the exact address. Compare the nearest stop, the last return service and the walk with luggage. Use the official bus timetables for your dates; a connection between towns does not guarantee a convenient final leg to every property.
3. Compare like-for-like quotes. Use the same dates, guests and cancellation terms, then check cleaning, linen, parking and any additional charges. We do not label one destination the cheapest without comparable quotes.
4. With children or a group, check the layout. Bedrooms, bathrooms, entrance steps and space to eat together can matter more than a broad “family-friendly” label. See our family accommodation and outing guide.

Our house is in Cares, in Comano Terme, and is booked as a whole home. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a private garden and free parking. There are six fixed sleeping places—two double beds in separate rooms and two single beds in the third—with an additional bed for a seventh guest.

It suits a family or group that wants shared space and a place to return to between different outings. Linen, towels and final cleaning are included in the total price. There are entrance steps; the rooms and bathrooms are then on the same floor. Check the full accommodation and arrival details before deciding.

Do I need to stay in all three places?

No. Choose one base if you value unpacking once and your planned journeys are manageable. Consider splitting a longer holiday only when you genuinely want several consecutive days in different areas.

Which base should I choose for a two-night break?

Our suggestion is to stay near the activity you most want to do, then keep a second day flexible. Trying to cover Comano, Molveno and Riva in one short break can turn the holiday into a sequence of transfers.

Can I use the same plan outside summer?

Recheck it for your dates. Bus timetables, lifts, thermal services and outdoor conditions can change. The destination descriptions are a starting point, not a promise that every attraction is open throughout the year.
